The Sound Of The East Coast

An immersive installation that engages the visitors in sound and touch.  Sound and movement are intertwined to create a wholistic experience that represents the essence of the song El Yamal. The song is used as a chant to release energy that moves people forward. The sea in the song is an analogy to the varied emotional states that the “بحار”* goes through.   The strong energy of the song is echoed throughout the space causing silicon vessels to react thus embodying the emotional experience of the past present and future. Furniture pieces create movement in stillness by representing the sound waves of the song.

An immersive installation that to represent the east coast of Saudi Arabia. In particular this exhibition honours the traditions of Pearl diving, known to have contributed heavily to the economy of the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The installation is a collaboration between three designers, each interpreting in different ways the traditional song of El Yamal , a traditional song used by pearl divers whilst at sea to help them release energy and gain strength through their tasks. The song represents a variety of emotional states that the Bahar go through, Edited by Ahaad Al Amoudi to convey a sense of meditative state and reflect the gentle movement of the sea, It draws in visitors with its gentle and subtle rhythm. Once in the space, they are greeted with 100 pieces of slow and soft moving silicone vessels designed by Lina Saleh, to represent a physical form of the song El Yamal, they move rhythmically to the song. each piece is designed with the same circular shape, using the same mould, however each piece is completely individual to represent the struggle of the pearl divers, representing how much control they could have in their journey and how much control they did not.  At the end of the space visitors can engage with modular pieces of furniture that represent El Yamal’s sound waves in solid state, designed by Sana Abdulwahed, these pieces are inspired by the traditional arabic seating, whilst carrying the sea indoors through their shape and connection to the song el Yamal.
