HH Sheikha Jawaher Responds To The Needs Of Syrian Refugee Children
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees conveys its deepest gratitude and appreciation for the continued tireless efforts made by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and UNHCR Eminent Advocate. Her Highness has responded to an immediate appeal made by Syrian refugee children in Jordan through a generous donation of USD 200,000 to provide life-saving assistance to Syrian children and their families. This initiative comes as UNHCR announces that the total number of Syrian refugee children has reached one million, in a jointly issued statement by UNHCR and UNICEF last Friday. The statement highlights the dire need to provide urgent assistance that would contribute to the return of Syrian refugee children to school and to improve their living conditions. Applauding Her Highness’s kind support, the UNHCR Regional Representative to the GCC Countries, Imran Riza said, “Children make up more than half of the Syrian refugee population. Most are living in very dire conditions and perhaps worst of all, their futures are very much in limbo. This timely donation by Her Highness will help us to try to ensure that the basic needs of Syrian refugee children and their families are adequately addressed.”We are hopeful that others throughout the region will join Her Highness’s efforts in sending a message of solidarity to Syrian refugees.’ Riza added. The Big Heart Campaign for Syrian Refugees launched by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi on 20 June coincided with UNHCR’s commemoration of World Refugee Day in benefit of Syrian refugee children and to alleviate their plight. Her Highness has mobilized considerable interest and support in the United Arab Emirates and throughout the GCC region.
